A Slice of Heaven: My Unforgettable Journey to Kashmir

If I had to describe Kashmir in one word, it would be magic. We’ve all seen the photos and heard the famous saying about "Paradise on Earth," but standing there is something else entirely. It’s not just a place you visit; it’s a place you feel.

Here is a little glimpse into what it’s like to experience the heart of the valley.

The Colours of the Valley:

The first thing that hits you is the color. Kashmir doesn't just have one shade of green - it has a thousand shades. In, the spring the Tulip Gardens look like a giant box of crayons spilled over the earth. By autumn, the massive Chinar trees turn a deep, fiery orange that makes the whole world looks like its glowing.

Life on a Floating City:

  • The Morning Market: Seeing locals sell fresh vegetables & flowers from their boats while the mist is still on the water.

  • The Shikara Ride: Sitting back on a wooden boat, gliding past lotus flowers, and watching the mountains reflect in the water like a giant mirror.

Mountains that Touch the Sky:

Heading up to Gulmarg and Pahalgam feels like entering a different world. The air is so crisp and fresh it almost tastes like cold water. Whether you’re walking through pine forests or taking a cable car high above the clouds, the scale of the Himalayas makes you feel tiny in the best way possible.

Warmth in a Cup:

You can’t talk about Kashmir without mentioning Kahwa. This golden tea, brewed with saffron, cinnamon, and almonds, is like a warm hug in a cup. Sitting with a local family, sipping tea while hearing stories about the valley, I realized that the real beauty of Kashmir isn’t just the views - it’s the incredible kindness of the people who live there. Though the temperature freezes but the Kahwa will keep you warm throughout the trip.

Highlights of Local Delicacies:

  • The Wazwan Feast: This is a grand multi-course meal featuring masterpieces like Rogan Josh and Gushtaba (velvety meatball in white yogurt curry). It’s considered a royal culinary art.

  • The Famous Teas: Kashmiris love their tea. There’s the golden Kahwa, which is sweet and spicy with saffron and almonds, and the unique Noon Chai, which is a creamy, pink, salty tea.

  • Unique Local Ingredients: The cuisine uses local treasures like Lotus Stem (Nadru) and crunchy baby potatoes (Dum Aloo), all flavored with the world’s finest saffron and mild Kashmiri chilies.
